Family, friends say goodbye to slain doctor

08:30 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 1, 2004

By Jason Whitely / 11 News

Dozens of people gathered in Friendswood Wednesday for the funeral of a doctor gunned down by his 10-year-old son.

Dr. Rick Lohstroh, 41, had just picked up his sons for a weekend visit when the oldest one allegedly fired several shots at him from the back seat of his SUV.

Dr. Lohstroh had joint custody of the boys with his ex-wife, Deborah Geisler. It was a contentious split his friends at work often worried about.

"There were a lot of charges brought against Dr. Lohstroh by his ex-wife," said Dr. Russell Miller, a friend. "We all felt like that was part of a malicious process."

One of the most serious charges Deborah Geisler reported to police was an allegation that Lohstroh sexually abused the 10-year-old -- an allegation police could not prove. According to the Houston Chronicle, Lohstroh passed two lie detector tests concerning the allegations.

Geisler has claimed the alleged sexual assault and witnessing his parents fighting may have led to the 10-year-old to shoot his father.

Friends don't believe it. They point to a taped point to this conversation Lohstroh recorded during the divorce... where Geisler threatened to report child abuse again:

DEB: "I want to speak to my sons unless you want me to call the police and report child abuse."

RICK: "Call the police!"

RICK: "Call the police!"

DEB: "OK. I'll do that."

RICK: "Fine."

Among those attending Lohstroh's funeral in Friendswood were Deborah Geisler's mother and brother. It's unknown if the ex-wife attended or brought the couple's other child, an 8-year-old boy, to say goodbye.

Right now Harris County homicide detectives tell us they're looking closely at exactly how the 10-year-old boy got the gun. It belonged to Deborah Geisler. She claims it was locked up and unloaded.
